With the exception of benzodiazepines (e.g. Valium), marijuana has the longest detectability. If you smoke a joint, it can be traced in your urine for seven to 30 days, depending upon your frequency of use and body type. That contrasts starkly with the detectability of more dangerous and addictive drugs, including heroin, meth, and cocaine.

With all the often-discussed dangers of drugs, drinking, bullying, and crime, it’s not difficult to overlook the fact that the No. 1 cause of death for teens is motor-vehicle crashes. Yet the reality is that more than 2,600 of young adults aged 15 to 19 years old were involved in fatal accidents in 2013 —and another 130,000 were injured, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

So in recognition of this week’s National Teen Driver Safety Week, Michelin commissioned a study of more than 1,000 adults about driving and the safety advice they’ve received — and offered — to shed some light on how people learn the best rules of the road. It’s useful intel for parents, in fact, considering that the authority most often cited as a “source of useful driving advice” is “Dad,” according to 52 percent of respondents. (“Mom,” meanwhile, came in second with 32 percent of the vote, and drivers’ education instructors ranked third, with 27 percent).

Still, drivers on the whole don’t hold back when it comes to doling out their tips — 75 percent of the adults surveyed say that they have instructed someone else while a passenger in the car — despite the distinct unlikelihood that every driver actually is as proficient as they say they are. For instance, 81 percent of those Michelin surveyed said that they themselves were “great” or nearly great drivers, while just 57 percent said the same of their sibling, 54 percent of their spouse or partner. (Grandma and Grandpa hold the lowest ranks, in comparison, with 11 percent and 20 percent of the vote, respectively). Who then causes all the accidents out there? Tellingly, 62 percent of those surveyed report that the blame lies with “someone else.”

In an effort to get a truly broad range of actionable advice to help teens become safer drivers, Yahoo’s Global News Anchor Katie Couric has partnered with Michelin on a new public service campaign: #SharingSafety. The campaign, on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram, urges drivers to offer their driving tips with the aim of educating all.

Parents, though, remain the most essential part of the safety mission, Kara Macek, director of communications at the Governors Highway Safety Association, tells Yahoo Parenting. And they can start by taking a look at what they do themselves when they get behind the wheel. “Parents have to be a good role model and actually be the driver that they want their teen to be,” she says, “because teens are very adept at spotting hypocrisy and will recognize when their mom or dad says one thing and does another.”

Teen drivers’ most dangerous behaviors, according to the NHTSA, include alcohol use (20 percent of the drivers killed in crashes had been drinking); distracted driving (318 people were killed in wrecks that involved a distracted teen driver); speeding (a factor in 42 percent of the aforementioned crashes); and passengers. “Data shows that a teenage driver is 2.5 times more likely to engage in risky behaviors when driving with one teenage passenger, and three times more likely with multiple teenage passengers,” the organization details in a report promoting its “5 to Drive” safety campaign.

Thankfully, the fifth trouble area for teens is an easily preventable one: driving or riding without a seatbelt. “The sad truth is that in more than half of the fatalities, teens are unbuckled,” Macek tells Yahoo Parenting. “Seatbelts really do save lives. Parents need to remind their teens that seatbelts should be used, every seat, every time, no matter how short a distance they’re going. They really need to be a broken record about it because while the first order of business is to avoid a crash, the second order is to survive it, and seatbelts make a huge difference.” Yet the NHTSA reports that only 25 percent of parents “have had a serious talk with their kids about the key components of driving,” including belts.

Moms and dads “need to set expectations up front,” Macek declares, suggesting that parents insist point-blank on phone-free driving and a limited number of fellow teen passengers. “Teen are overrepresented in crashes and fatalities largely due to the fact that they’re not experienced, so the most important thing that parents can do is just be engaged in the issue,” she adds. “We are all so pressed for time that it’s hard to do, but it’s critical.” It is, after all, a matter of life and death.

But
does the fact it can pass as an iPhone if you squint your eyes mean
it’s as good as Apple’s handset? I spent a short time with HTC checking
out the One A9, and it has promise.

Don’t call it an iPhone

So
the One A9 looks like an iPhone, that much is clear. But don’t you dare
say that to HTC. The company says that the design for its handset came
from melding the look and feel of its two existing phones, the One M9
and the Desire 816.

But
the average person doesn’t care why a phone looks a certain way, as
long as it’s attractive. And the One A9 certainly is attractive. Its
smooth glass-covered front panel and finished back feel wonderful, and
HTC has machined the phone’s sides to help improve your grip on the
handset.

HTC
will sell the One A9 in dark gray, white, gold, and dark read, or as
the company refers to them, carbon grey, opal silver, topaz gold, and
deep garnet. Of the three, the deep garnet is easily the most appealing,
mainly because it’s also the most unique.

In
terms of size, the One A9 weighs 5.7 x 2.8 x 0.29 inches and weighs
5.04 ounces, which is a bit larger, but the same weight as the iPhone
6s, which measures 5.4 x 2.6 x 0.28 inches. That said, the One A9 does
have a larger screen than the iPhone 6s, 5 inches to 4.7 inches.

As
with most smartphone makers, HTC puts its own skin, or theme, on top of
Android 6.0, which includes changes to the look of icons and the
inclusion of first-party apps. It’s essentially a way for companies that
make Android smartphones to differentiate themselves from their
competitors, and unfortunately it can bog down a handset and feel heavy
handed.

Thankfully,
HTC says it has actually cut back on how much it altersGoogle’s Android
interface. I couldn’t tell how much the company scaled back on
its changes, as I didn’t have much time to go through the phone’s
operating system, but hopefully it means we’ll see fewer built-in
third-party apps.

In
recent years, HTC’s smartphones have struggled when it comes to camera
quality. In fact, in my recent smartphone camera roundup, the HTC One M9
was the worst performer out of all of the current smartphones on the
market. With the One A9, HTC went back to the drawing board.

The
company scrapped the 20-megapixel camera found on its One M9 handset,
and instead chose to go with a 13-megapixel sensor with optical image
stabilization, which helps ensure your shots come out clear even if your
phone shakes while you take them. Apple’s iPhone 6s comes with a
12-megapixel sensor, but doesn’t include optical image stabilization.

HTC
says its new camera will capture better photos in low-light conditions,
which is where the company’s previous handsets fell flat. I’ll have to
spend more time with the One A9, however, to see if HTC actually
delivers on its promise.

The
One A9 comes equipped with an 8-core processor and 3GB of RAM. The
processor HTC chose isn’t the most powerful on the market, but it should
be plenty fast to handle almost anything you can throw at it. HTC says
it will sell the One A9 with either 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage,
though the handset will also include the ability to increase space up to
2GB via its microSD card slot.

The
one area where the HTC One A9 is incredibly fast is its fingerprint
recognition. The fingerprint reader, which is built into the phone’s
home button, read my fingerprint and unlocked the phone almost
instantly. Compared to the One A9, my Samsung Galaxy S6’s fingerprint
reader felt like it took forever to read my print.

Perhaps
the most interesting thing about HTC’s new handset is that it comes
with a 1-year replacement plan the company calls Uh Oh Protection. What
that means is you can drop your phone, break the screen, submerge it in
water, or generally just smash it and HTC will replace it for free.

HTC
is a struggling company that needs its next handset to be an absolute
hit. So far, the One A9 has the makings of a winner, but I’ll have to
spend more time with it before I can say whether it can rival Apple’s
iPhone or Samsung’s Galaxy S6.

From
what I’ve seen, the phone has a lot of promise, but what it all comes
down to is whether its camera is any good and, of course, how well it
performs. Stay tuned for my full review in the near future.

If costume makeup is on your agenda this Halloween, you may want to reconsider your getup or at least be cautious with your cosmetic choices. Side effects of toxic costume makeup can be extreme, so take some tips from the pros this Halloween and be thoughtful when you’re dressing up.
We spoke with New York City dermatologist Dr. Sejal Shah, an expert in skin conditions and diseases such as acne and rosacea, as well as those affecting hair and nails. Shah filled us in on the hazards you might encounter through your Halloween costume — it turns out the scariest part of your costume might be what’s in your makeup. Here’s what to look for, and how to avoid the risks.

Colorful makeup and dyes
“Besides color additives, makeup contains a number of base ingredients, such as fillers, fragrances, binders, emollients, and preservatives, to name a few,” says Shah. “In cheap Halloween makeup, it’s usually these base ingredients that are lower quality and likely to cause skin problems. Halloween makeup has also been found to contain detectable levels of heavy metals that can cause problems.” As far as reactions go, Shah says that the heavy texture of Halloween makeup makes it more likely to cause acne. But a few pimples should be the least of your worries. “The FDA does not require cosmetic products and ingredients to be FDA-approved before going to market,” she warns. “The exception to this is color additives, which do require FDA approval, but it is possible to have reactions to dyes.” Shah advises checking the FDA-approved list of color additives. She says red dye is known for causing reactions (it’s also found in other colors) as is PPD (paraphenylenediamine), found in black and dark colored cosmetics and dye.

Masks, prosthetics, plasticizers, and adhesives
Even if you’re not wearing makeup, you may be putting your skin at risk with low-quality masks, plasticizers, or prosthetics when worn for an extended period of time. “Absorption of these plasticizers through the skin from wearing a mask for a short time is low, but the risk is still there,” says Shah. “A poorly fitting mask can [also] cause skin irritation.” Another risky Halloween add-on may be your faux eyelashes or nails. “Glue can damage the nails or cause loss of the eyelashes, either due to pulling and traction [or cause a] skin reaction at the lash line or eyelids,” says Shah.

Be on the look out for heavy metal
And no, we don’t mean the loud music. “The scariest and most concerning substances found in Halloween makeup are heavy metals, which can be toxic,” says Shah. “For example, lead has been found in these makeups, and although lead poisoning doesn’t commonly occur via the skin, it can be absorbed through the skin.”

How to be safe this Halloween

Do a patch test
Shah suggests doing a patch test any time you are using a new product or have sensitive skin. “I recommend applying a small amount to your inner arm — the inner elbow or inner wrist work well — to see if you develop a reaction,” she says. “Some people may develop a reaction immediately; whereas in others it might take a few days, so it’s a good idea to test it out for a few days, even up to a week.”

Check your ingredients
“There is a list of approved color additives on the FDA’s website, so check your makeup’s ingredient list against this list,” says Shah. Be sure to bring the list with you when shopping for costume makeup, especially if you have sensitive skin.

Don’t be too frugal
If you spend more money on face paint or Halloween makeup, you can expect better quality ingredients. “If your regular makeup isn’t going to complete your Halloween costume, try to go for high quality theater makeup,” says Shah. Look for natural-based makeup to be safe.

Treat your skin right
Be mindful of the instructions on your costume makeup — they’re there for a reason. “If you must use inexpensive low quality makeup, don’t use it around your eyes or mouth, especially if it’s not meant for that area,” says Shah. For example, certain dyes are only FDA approved for certain areas. When it comes to removal, wash your makeup off as soon as possible. “You may need to double up on the cleansing (such as a makeup wipe or remover followed by cleanser) to ensure all the makeup is off, and apply a gentle moisturizer with calming ingredients to reduce any mild irritation or dryness. If you have a more significant reaction you may need to see your dermatologist.”

In 1989, teenage time traveler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) returned to theaters in Back to the Future Part II, the sequel to director Robert Zemeckis’s original sci-fi comedy classic. As the story unfolds, Marty and his temporal travel guide, Doctor Emmett Brown (Christopher Lloyd), flash forward in time to the exotic future environs of Oct. 21, 2015.

Alert readers will note the proximity of that particular date. So how does the movie’s conception of future sci-fi technology match up to our current reality? It gets kind of interesting, actually. And that’s not even counting the baseball thing.

This may be the best dollar ever spent on Chicago’s South Side.

In 2012, Theaster Gates bought an abandoned building from the city of Chicago for $1, a 20,000-square-foot bank built in 1923. The skylights had collapsed, and the interior was badly damaged from years of snow and rain. It, like many other derelict buildings in this area of Chicago, seemed destined for the wrecking ball until Gates stepped in.

Gates, an artist and urban planner who set up his studio on the South Side in the early 2000s, is working to remake the neighborhood. His nonprofit, the Rebuild Foundation, has a mission of “helping neighborhoods thrive through culture-driven redevelopment by activating abandoned spaces with arts and cultural programming.”

The renovation of the bank is the Rebuild Foundation’s most ambitious undertaking yet.

Recast as a contemporary art gallery, events space, community center, and library archive, the new Stony Island Arts Bank now serves as the Rebuild Foundation’s home base, and just opened as part of the Chicago Architecture Biennial, a three-month-long festival on design. Construction is complete, but details from the bank’s past (blistered paint, the rusted vault, the cracked plaster moldings) have been preserved to create a dialogue with the past.

The basement will be a music venue, the ground floor a bar and gallery, the second level the Rebuild Foundation’s library and community space, and the upper story the home for the vinyl archive of Frankie Knuckles (renowned as the “Godfather of House Music”). The University of Chicago and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago will keep their slide libraries at the Arts Bank.

The building and all of its resources are open to the public. It’s quickly become, in the words of Co.Design, “a sort of living room for the neighborhood.”

“Architecture becomes a complex envelope that can carry both the high and the low, the international and the very local, the rich and the poor,” Gates told Co.Design. “Only when those things start to conflate in really beautiful ways can we have a redemptive architecture … when lots of very different kinds of people feel like they can go into a building and that the building would be welcoming to them.”

It’s a brave example of how renovation can revitalize an entire neighborhood — even a place that Gates affectionately refers to as “the middle of the hood — make no doubt about it.”

Bravo to Gates and to all the makers and doers that could make such a thing even possible.

Boarding a plane is typically a pretty boring process.

However, when Chewbacca walks down the aisle and places a suitcase in the overhead compartment, things get exponentially more exciting.

After months of anticipation, All Nippon Airways’ first Star Wars Jet Liner has taken flight. On Sunday, the R2-D2 Ana Jet made its debut international journey from Haneda, Japan to Vancouver, Canada.

But before its premiere trip, the 787-9 Dreamliner first hit the skies on Oct. 17 for a fan appreciation flight. Hundreds of Star Wars fans showed up dressed as characters from the original trilogy, and boarded the plane for a quick flight over Haneda.

In addition to Chewbacca, dozens of Storm Troopers boarded the plane, accompanied by a few C-3PO’s, and a couple of eager padawans.

Photos show the R2-D2 theme applies to more than just the outside of the plane. The seatbacks have a R2-D2 covering, and the napkins and cups also don the robot’s famous print.

From mid-October to late-November, the R2-D2 plane’s principal route will be Narita, Japan to San Jose, Calif.

Starting in mid-December, the Star Wars inspired plane will fly from Haneda to Seattle, Sydney, Jakarta, Beijing, Munich, and Paris. There are also a few domestic flights scheduled for October.

The mark of a good chef or restaurant is how well either can roast a chicken. A moist and tender chicken is the quintessential comfort food, but an overcooked, dry bird will make you wish you’d ordered steak.

When roasting chicken at home, there’s an easy way to get a juicy roasted bird every time: cook the bird upside down.

I stumbled upon this technique when trying to multitask making dinner, checking e-mails, talking to my mother on the phone, and doing laundry. Since I wasn’t concentrating on the chicken, I absentmindedly placed my bird upside down on the rack, breast-side down. When it was ready, it was a beautiful brown color, so pretty I took a photo and showed my husband. He promptly pointed out that the breast was on the bottom, then laughed loudly at my mistake.

Nevertheless, the chicken was moist and flavorful. And very little was leftover after dinner.

I felt redemption a few weeks ago, when I took a class with chef Anita Jacobson, a 30-year veteran at the Institute of Culinary Education in New York. In Jacobson’s Fine Cooking I class, each group had its own 3-pound baby roast chicken to cook with a medley of vegetables and a brown butter sauce. Before we got cooking, Jacobson went over the recipe and told us to start cooking the bird breast-side down. (”Toldya!” I texted my husband from class.)

The birds turned out perfectly golden and juicy.

Jacobson explained why she browns her birds breast down. “Most of the fat on the bird is always in the back, and when you roast it breast-side down, instead of the fat dripping to the roasting pan, it drips into the bird and not into the pan,” she said. “I find they came out juicier and crisper when they’re cooked breast-side down.”

She recommends roasting the bird for 25 minutes per pound, starting the cooking time with the bird breast-side down, but turning it right side up halfway through. I cooked my bird above breast side down the entire time, and it still turned out delicious, and I got a deeper golden color on the top.

For the best roast chicken ever, don’t forget to dry and salt your bird well before baking, and use a proper sized pan for your whole chicken. “If there’s too much room on the side, steam forms,” Jacobson said.

Before carving, let your bird sit for at least 10 minutes to let juices rest into the meat.

Rosemary Roast Chicken
Makes: 2 servings

1 tablespoon minced rosemary or tarragon
2 tablespoons unsalted butter, at room temperature, plus 2 tablespoons melted One 2 ½- to 3-pound roasting, broiling, or frying chicken
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1 cup large diced carrots
1 cup large diced celery
1 cup large diced onion
2 tablespoons minced shallots
½ cup white wine
2 cups chicken stock
3 feet of kitchen string, for trussing
Shallow roasting pan with rack

Preheat the oven to 400°F. In a small bowl combine 1 tablespoon of the rosemary or tarragon and the softened butter. Blend well.

Loosen the chicken skin by inserting your fingers between it and the flesh of the breast. Place ½ tablespoon of the herb butter under the skin on each side of the breast. Truss the chicken, dry the outside well and rub the skin all over with 1 tablespoon of the butter. Season with salt and pepper. Truss the chicken with kitchen twine.

Distribute the carrots, celery and onions under the chicken. Place chicken on rack breast-side down and roast it for 30 minutes. Then, turn it over and roast the chicken breast up for 30 minutes. Cut between thigh and drumstick. If juice is clear remove from oven. If not roast another 15 minutes at 350°F.

Transfer the chicken to a warm platter. Remove the string and let stand at least 10 minutes before carving so the chicken’s juices will retreat into the tissues.

Pour the juices and vegetables from the roasting pan into a strainer, pressing down to extract all the juices. Discard the vegetables. Degrease the cooking juices, reserving 2 tablespoons of the fat.

Return the reserved fat to the roasting pan. Stir in the minced shallots and cook until lightly colored, 2 to 3 minutes. Deglaze the pan with white wine, scraping up the coagulated juices with a wooden spoon. Add the degreased juices and 2 cups stock and boil rapidly over high heat. Let the liquid reduce to about ¾ cup. Remove the pan from the heat and whisk in the remaining tablespoon of herb butter. Pour the sauce over the chicken or serve it separately in a gravy boat.

Beau Jacobson is 23 years old, 6 feet and 3 inches tall, and currently weighs 200 pounds. In high school, he weighed 285 pounds, but his desire to lose weight led him to develop a binge-eating disorder that dropped him to 159 pounds. This is how he found his way out of that disorder to lead a healthy lifestyle today.

The Turning Point
When I was 11 years old, both my mom and dad remarried and I went to a new school. I think because of this new period of change in my life, I turned to food for comfort. They pantry was always loaded with almost every Little Debbie snack cake you can imagine. I was a huge fan of Lunchables, Oreos, pizza, Lean Pockets (and I took the fact that they were called “lean” to mean I could eat a lot of them), and of course, McDonald’s. I ate and ate and ate.

In high school, it was the same old, same old: more eating, choir, and a lot of football. I loved football — I loved playing offensive line, and to play on the line, you have to be big. So weighing 280 pounds was viewed as acceptable because I was just “football big.” I was also in choir, and during my junior year we did a jazz show on stage. That’s when a light bulb turned on for me. My weight was definitely an issue. I told myself, “Once football is over, I’m losing weight. I will never get on stage and look like that again.”

The Changes
I kept weight training hard like I did every offseason in football, made a lot of food swaps (like trading Chipotle burritos — filled with every unhealthy thing they had — for Subway sandwiches), and started playing a lot of pickup basketball for cardio. Ninety percent of the change was through my diet. I lost 45 pounds in about three months for the next choir performance, and another 20 pounds by graduation.

Then I moved to Lubbock so that I could attend college at Texas Tech. I joined Sigma Phi Epsilon, excelled in my classes, and still made time to work out. However, this is when I began binge eating. It started when I saw a picture of myself online. I thought I looked bad and was so afraid of ever becoming big again that I decided to change what I was doing. I would eat really healthy during the weekdays and then go all out — eating whatever I wanted — on Saturdays. Many times, I would go to the dining hall and grab a pint of Blue Bell ice cream, a box of Gobstoppers, and some Oreos. The next day, I would wake up feeling so guilty that I’d hardly eat anything.

Over the next year, I started running three miles a day, hitting the weight room and consuming less than 1,000 calories per day Monday through Friday. Then on the weekends, I would eat about 4,000 calories each day. Still, I was dropping weight. People told me all the time, “You look thin” — and they didn’t mean it in a good way. They were concerned.

The breaking point came when my dad asked me, “If I set you up with a trainer, would you go?” I thought about it and said yes because I wanted to gain more muscle. I needed that push. I met my trainer, Justin Blevins, and immediately respected his approach. He didn’t try to accuse me of doing everything wrong; instead, he wanted to educate me and help mold me into a healthy person. Through his help, I began to realize how messed up my relationship with food and exercise had been. I started eating seven meals a day, weight trained like crazy, and — most importantly — stopped binge eating.

The After
After overcoming my eating disorder and working with my trainer, I started seeing changes and feeling better about the way I looked. I began to feel differently, too. I had a lot more energy, and over time I have gained more confidence. I sing gigs around town and now I’m not even afraid to step up in front of a large crowd and sing.
I’m also planning to compete in the Men’s Physique division of the National Physique Committee in the summer of 2016. It’s like bodybuilding, but with no Speedos and you don’t have to be quite as big as famous bodybuilders like Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Since I’m prepping for that competition, my diet is pretty extreme. I’m currently eating five meals a day. One meal has six ounces of lean protein like turkey or chicken, one meal has six ounces of a fattier protein like steak or salmon, one meal is an omelet consisting of two eggs and two egg whites, and the other two meals are protein shakes. I drink one immediately post-workout, and work the other in at some point during the day. I eat complex carbs like oatmeal, sweet potatoes, brown rice, quinoa, and fruits, as well as any green vegetable that I like (asparagus and brussels sprouts are my favorites).

If I have something indulgent, I don’t call it a “cheat meal” — I call it a “reward meal.” If I work hard, my trainer will work a reward meal into my weekly plan. I would be lying if I said that they never make me feel guilty, but I’m still working to overcome every aspect of my mental struggle from my eating disorder. But I remind myself that if I work hard day in and day out, then we deserve to have a reward!

For exercise, I do high-intensity interval training (HIIT) cardio two to three times a week and steady-state cardio two times a week for 30 minutes. I also lift six days a week and really push myself during those sessions so I can reach my full potential. The lifting is intense, but i love it!

The Maintenance
For me, in order to maintain my healthy lifestyle, I have to be a creature of habit.

Food prepping is just one of those habits. Every Sunday after church, I go to the grocery store, buy my items, and spend the afternoon cooking my meals. If a meal is already prepared, it takes away any temptation to order a pizza or pick up Chinese takeout. Plus, cooking allows me to make meals that I really enjoy and create some crazy flavor combos!

Working out as early in the day as possible is important because it not only gets it out of the way, but it also tends to make the rest of my day a lot better. When I wake up, have breakfast, and get a great workout in right away, I always feel like my day is already off to a good start.

I stay inspired and moving toward my goal by writing motivational quotes in marker on my mirror. I also find that if you’re open with people about your goals, then those people can help support you and encourage you along the way.

The Struggles
I’m in college, so it’s hard to not get jealous of how others eat. My roommates order pizza and eat donuts all the time. Luckily, I’ve established this healthy routine as part of my lifestyle so the temptation is not as strong as it once was. I remind myself of how much happier I am now, how much stronger I feel mentally and emotionally, and how good it feels to be confident in my appearance. I LOVE my life now that I am living healthy!

Advice
Make your workouts fun! Join a gym where you’re comfortable and have people around you that will inspire you, motivate you, and hold you accountable. Going on this journey alone is nearly impossible. I love going to Hero Training Center because through this process, I have made some of my best friendships there. It will make you better physically, mentally, and emotionally to embark on this process with a great support system.

Know that you can do it! You can lose weight. You can overcome the mental barriers associated with eating disorders. You can be healthy and be the best possible version of you! Just have a plan, a goal, and a support system, and soon enough, you’ll be enjoying the rewards that come with a healthy life.

A Chat With the Space Sommelier

The latest trend in cocktails is out of this world. Literally.

Over the summer Japanese company Suntory announced plans to send samples of its whiskey to the International Space Station, and recently the Scottish whiskey distillery Ardbeg released tasting notes from a vial sent up in 2011.

With all that booze in microgravity, Yahoo Food decided to talk to longtime NASA food scientist Charles Bourland, who has been called a “space sommelier” in the blogosphere. But Bourland doesn’t consider himself a wine expert. The assignment to develop space flight-ready wine in the early 1970s was actually handed to him by a teetotaling boss before the Agency’s alcohol ban.

Charles Bourland worked for NASA for 31 years. (Photo: Courtesy of Charles Bourland)

Beverages were just one aspect of the work he did on his remarkable career. He developed space food and packaging for 31 years at NASA, working on the space station Skylab, Apollo missions, the joint U.S.-Soviet Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, the Space Shuttle program, and the International Space Station for more than 31 years. After retiring in 2000, he taught at the University of Houston, served as an aerospace consultant, and co-wrote The Astronaut’s Cookbook.

From his home in rural Missouri, Bourland discussed the early days with us, and what he thinks about the latest plan to age whiskey in space.

What drew you to food science and nutrition originally as an area of study?

I was working in a dairy, and it was family-owned. You had to be family if you wanted a promotion so I decided to go back to graduate school. I got to graduate school and majored in food science and nutrition, but I had no idea that I would get into space nutrition. I just got that job by serendipity.

How did wine first come up in discussion?

They said [Skylab] is going to be a home away from home and if you have a home, a lot of people have a drink now and then. You can’t just take a bottle of booze up there — well, the Russians do. We couldn’t. It had to be packaged in a plastic container inside of a can, and we got that all figured out.

Then word got out that we were working on putting alcohol in space and NASA got a lot of resistance. They surveyed the crew, the first crew that was going up to taste this alcohol, and they said, “Well, we really don’t care either way.” So NASA said let’s do away with that. But we’d already bought the wine and had it in the refrigerator ready to go.

Before NASA said no alcohol in space, were you essentially the wine expert?

[Laughs]. Oh, no. Only thing I knew was how to drink it. I don’t know much about wine. The only reason I got to be in charge of it was my boss was a Mormon. He said, “That would be a good job for you, Dr. Bourland.”

So we went through taste tests and all that kind of stuff to make sure everything was working. We talked with [experts from] the University of California at Davis. They recommended a sherry that we took, Paul Masson’s rare cream sherry. They said, “It’s already been heated so it wouldn’t hurt to repackage it.”

I read that the tests didn’t go well.

For some reason when we opened it up on the zero-G plane, people would just go for their barf bags. I never did understand why. When you’ve got a plane like this, any kind of food you open up just immediately fills the cabin with an odor.

The alcohol didn’t go to waste, right?

No, we had the astronauts three weeks before the Skylab mission. They were partially quarantined but we had to supply all the food. They were on a specified mineral intake. There were seven different nutrients that had to be fairly close all the time, the same amount every day, and wine didn’t affect that so they could have wine.

Do you think wine could have a nutritional benefit for those in space?

I would think so. Most people said that it does here, as long as you don’t overdo it.

Bourland in a NASA kitchen. (Photo: Courtesy of Charles Bourland)

Do you think NASA will ever change its policy?

[Laughs] I don’t know. Back then, they were real sensitive to the press and to the letters they got.

So this whiskey business: The Japanese company Suntory sent some into space.

Did they send it in some kind of wooden barrel?

They’re sent in [glass flasks]. The first was vials of whiskey with charred oak chips in it.

So the chips are in it. I can’t see the advantage of aging in space other than if you had it in a barrel or something.

The idea was that they could potentially get a mellower flavor up in space. What happens that might make them think that?

The surface tension is the only thing that would be different, I think, but that might affect some of the reactions that are going on.

Did you have a favorite space beverage during your time working for NASA?

All the beverages were Tang or Tang-types. The main reason we used those is because they had to be vacuum packed so when you add water it doesn’t have any air bubbles inside. If you vacuum package a natural fruit juice it will harden and it won’t rehydrate when you add the water back.

What’s your alcoholic beverage of choice these days?

I usually drink beer.

Which kind? I have to ask.

You’d be glad to hear this because you’re in Colorado, right? Coors. Hard to find around here, though. Most stores don’t have it.

Johnny Depp has been nominated for three Best Actor Academy Awards, for Sweeney Todd, Finding Neverland, and for the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. And that’s enough for him.

The actor is getting Oscar buzz for playing mobster Whitey Bulger in Black Mass. However, Depp says he doesn’t want to win for this or any other role in the future. As quoted in Vanity Fair, Depp says, “I don’t want to win one of those things ever, you know.”

The reasons why? One reason he gives is “I don’t want to have to talk.” Given the amount of cringe-worthy acceptance speeches that Oscar winners have made, I don’t blame him. In addition, Depp doesn’t like the competition: “The idea of winning means that you’re in competition with someone and I’m not in competition with anybody.”

Is that explanation meant as a display of arrogance, or a desire for Depp to keep his focus on his work? You decide. His concluding remark about the Oscars sounds pretty gracious, though: “They gave me one of those things, like a nomination, two or three times. A nomination is plenty.”

If Depp does become the frontrunner for the nomination, though, we’ll see how he really feels about winning, probably by how much effort he puts into campaigning.
If you see a cliff, chances are there is an adrenaline junkie willing to push the limits and walk to the edge. And thanks to the popularity of Instagram, even more people are putting themselves in dangerous situations just to snap the perfect photo.

It seems we can’t go more than a few days without reading about a death-by-selfie. In fact, just last week a Russian teen fell to his death after posing for a photo while dangling from a roof. The teen, Andrey R, had previously taken similar pictures on roofs, which he shared on social media.

There are a handful of breathtaking locations around the world that attract daredevils in search of the perfect photo. If all goes as planned, the photo has the potential to go viral. But if the photographer moves just an inch in the wrong direction, the photo could be their final act.

Trolltunga

Trolltunga, which translates to “trolls tongue,” juts out nearly 2,300 feet above lake Ringedalsvatnet in Norway. This rock formation is THE place to take the ultimate selfie, and thousands hike to its edge every year. While many successfully snap their photos, on Sept. 5, 2015, an Australian woman fell to her death while standing on the edge of the rock.

Kjeragbolten

Norway is also the site of Kjeragbolten, a boulder wedged in between a mountain crevasse. Long lines form every day, filled with people hoping to snap a photo on top of the dubious rock. It appears as if the rock isn’t going anywhere, but part of the thrill is that we just don’t know when that rock will wiggle itself free.

Half Dome

Yosemite National Park is known for its impressive geology, and the star of the park is the gigantic Half Dome. This granite crest rises 4,737 ft above the valley floor and is a popular spot for hikers around the world. Once they reach the summit, many opt for a photo on what is called “The Visor.” With no rails and frequent rock movement, obtaining this photo is not only dangerous…it’s downright crazy. Another hotspot to take an Instagram-worthy photos at Half Dome is called the “diving board.”

The Cliffs of Moher are Ireland’s most popular natural tourist attraction and stand at 702 feet at their highest point. But in addition to their awe-inspiring beauty, the area is also known to have frequent rock falls. The cliffs are under constant watch by experts, and are deemed safe as long as tourists stay on the trail. But as we all know, tourists never stay on the trail.
Devils Pools in Victoria Falls

Standing at 354 feet tall, a person has to be insane to go swim near the edge of the breathtaking Victoria Falls. Yet every year, thousands of visitors risk their lives for the ultimate photo opportunity. Devil’s Pool is a small eddy that forms near the waterfall edge between the months of September and December. Adventurous tourists can swim in the pool, and even pose for photos while teetering near the edge. In the past, there have been deaths reported when swimmers slipped past the protective barrier.
Potato Chip Rock

If you stand on a potato chip, it breaks. So why in the world would a person stand on the edge of a formation called Potato Chip rock?

Located at the top of a four-mile hike in Poway, California, this rock formation has become the subject of many Instagram photos over the last couple of years. It might look daunting, but the rock extends over foliage, making the drop about 20 feet instead of the whole shebang. Still, that’s a far enough drop to break some serious bones.

Mount Huashan Hiking Trail

Is it just us, or does that trail look a little worse for wear? (Photo: RyanJShort/Instagram)

Dubbed the most dangerous hiking trail in the world, the Mount Huashan path is definitely not for the faint of heart. After climbing up a steep staircase, and other vertical walks, hikers then scurry across a plank trail made of wooden platforms bolted onto the mountainside. It’s on this shaky bridge that visitors often snap photos. Sure, they are secured with climbing ropes, but ropes break, and that’s a long way down.

Why? Just why? (Photo: Geobooms/Instagram)

Wedding Cake Rock features stark white cliffs overlooking the beautiful blue ocean, and attracts nearly 10,000 visitors to Royal National Park in Sydney, Australia every month. Many simply sit on the edge, but others push the envelope, striking unstable yoga poses or dangling their bodies from the side. In 2014, a man fell to his death while hanging off the edge. Adding to the danger, the National Parks and Wildlife Service believes the rock will likely crumble into the ocean within 10 years.

Every bridge has its fair share of daredevils looking to climb it, but the Moscow bridge in Kiev has become a hotspot for people in search of an epic Instagram shot. The suspension bridge stands at 390 feet, and recently made headlines after a 21-year-old girl fell to her death while attempting to take a selfie.

Sure, you can walk on a flat forest trail, but what’s the fun in that? Real adventure seekers opt for El Caminito Del Rey, a shaky walkway located along a narrow gorge in Malaga, Spain. The pathway reaches heights of 330 feet, and was in such disrepair that it was partially closed for more than a decade. Even with those precautions, five people died between 1999 and 2000. The walkway reopened in 2015, and photos of the dangerous trek have been popping up all over Instagram.

All of us have our share of phobias, whether they’re sharks, snakes, or even butterflies (thanks a lot, Spongebob). However, there are a select few who find the sight of certain foods absolutely terrifying. Here are 7 strange food phobias that you might have without even knowing it…

1. Lachanophobia (luh-can-uh-fo-biah) – Fear of Vegetables

Those who have lachanophobia find the sight of any or all vegetables terrifying. Some reasons why you might be lachanophoic are that you are afraid to accidentally swallow a bug while eating the vegetable, or you believe that by ingesting the seeds, a vegetable plant will sprout out of you (think Chuckie on the Rugrats). At least you could save some $$$ on groceries.

2. Ichthyophobia (ick-theo-fo-biah) – Fear of Fish

Some people find the sight, smell, and texture of fish to be terrifying. The cause of this phobia can be anything from the strong belief that fish are the cause of many illnesses, to a scarring experience that came with scuba diving. In other words, sushi dates are a no-go.

3. Mycophobia (my-SAH-fo-biah) – Fear or Aversion to Mushrooms

Mushrooms don’t necessarily grow in the most appetizing ways. However, if you have mycophobia, it’s not only the way they grow that scares you, but also the chance that you might be poisoned or find yourself in the middle of a psychedelic experience. #trippy

4. Methyphobia (meh-theh-fo-biah) – Fear of Alcohol

Being in college, alcohol has become a rather well-used, and at times, abused substance. Methyphobic individuals usually avoid alcohol because of a traumatic experience that involved booze, or because they just find the smell and taste to be absolutely disgusting (#tequila). Basically, just skip the wine and go straight to dine.

5. Consecotaleophobia (con-sec-oh-tay-leo-fo-bia) – Fear of Chopsticks

That’s right. Consecotaleophobia is the fear of chopsticks, whether your reason is that you are afraid to drop food all over yourself, poke your eye out, or embarrass yourself by showing how unskilled you are. Again, sushi dates are not an option.

6. Deipnophobia (dehp-no-fo-bia) – Fear of Dinner Parties, Dining with Others and Dinner Conversations

Eating alone isn’t always a bad thing. In fact, those who are deipnophobic would prefer to eat by themselves because they fear that awkward dining table small talk. On the bright side, at least you don’t have to constantly be asked about how your day went.

7. Cibophobia (see-boh-fo-bia) – Fear of Food/Eating

Having cibophobia can mean that you are afraid of food because of a scarring experience with food poisoning, too many food allergies, or you find food in general to be disgusting. If you have cibophobia, this website might as well be the next Saw movie.

For the past week, my usually naked wrist has played host to Samsung’s new Gear S2 smartwatch. And though I’ve tested and reviewed more than a dozen such gadgets over the past two years, this is the first one I’ve actually wanted to buy.

Since I have an Android phone, an Apple Watch is out of the question for me. There are plenty of Google’s Android Wear watches out there, and they’re generally inexpensive. But they don’t do much beyond display notifications from your smartphone on your wrist. Samsung’s new Gear S2 is the first smartwatch I’ve tried that’s functional enough to make me want to bring my wrist into the future.

Sporty and stylish
The Gear S2 comes in two unique styles. If you’re looking for something elegant, there’s the Classic model, which comes with a black bezel and black leather band. Then there’s the sportier base versions, available with either a dark gray stainless-steel bezel and black rubberized band, or a silver stainless steel bezel with white band.

Samsung sent me one of the standard models, with a white band, and while I wouldn’t pair it with my tux, I still found it to be rather attractive.

Both versions of the watch have the same beautiful 1.2-inch display, which like the Apple Watch, automatically comes to life when you raise your wrist as if to check the time.

On the watch’s right side are two small buttons. The top one is a universal Back button, which takes you one step back in whatever app you’re using. On the bottom is the Home button, which returns you to the watch face; pressing it from there takes you to the apps menu.

The biggest selling point of the Gear S2’s design, for me at least, is that it looks and feels like a regular watch. It’s not too bulky (as the original Moto 360 was) and it doesn’t weigh a ton. And while it’s probably still a bit too big for smaller women’s wrists, it should fit most anyone else who tries it on.

The setup
Like the Apple Watch and Google’s Android Wear watches, the Gear S2 requires you to download a special app before you can pair it with your smartphone via Bluetooth.

If you have a Samsung smartphone, you’ll have to download the Samsung Gear Manager app from the Galaxy App store. Once you install that app, you turn on your watch, tap a Pair icon on the Gear Manager app, and you’re more or less set. From that same app, you can also do things like customize the S2’s watch faces, change notification settings, and find new Gear apps.

In a decidedly un-Samsunglike move, the Gear S2 (which runs on Samsung’s Tizen operating system) is also compatible with most Android smartphones running Google’s Android 4.4 and later.

The only difference between using the S2 with a Samsung phone and any other Android handset is that things like the Samsung Pay mobile wallet app will only work on Samsung phones. Beyond that, the watch is every bit as functional when used with competing phones.

Intuitive interface
Remember when the Apple Watch came out, and everyone said its digital crown was the best way to navigate a smartwatch’s interface? Well, Samsung just one-upped that crown with the Gear S2’s rotating bezel.

Instead of twisting a crown on the side of the watch to scroll through apps and various menus, you simply rotate the Gear S2’s bezel. Each turn of that bezel elicits a satisfying click, and makes selecting onscreen items far easier than the Apple Watch’s crown.

Of course, you can always fall back on the S2’s touchscreen to navigate menus and the like. But for me, the bezel is the way to go.

The watch’s homescreen is, naturally, a watch face. You can customize the color and style of that face, and change it from digital to analog by long-pressing it for about a second. You can check your notifications by either swiping down on the watch face screen or by scrolling to the left.

Scrolling to the right brings up shortcuts to your apps screen, favorite contacts, settings, and Samsung’s S Voice voice controls. Moving further right brings you to the Gear S2’s step counter, calendar, weather app, music controls, heart-rate monitor, and activity tracker.

Like the Apple Watch, the Gear S2 alerts you when it detects that you’ve been sitting for too long and reminds you to stand and move around. (I will note that such reminders can be annoying when you’re sitting in a movie theater or at a ball game.)

Messaging from your wrist
Beyond telling the time, the Gear S2 provides you with notifications from your smartphone, just like every other smartwatch on the market.

And sure, like the Apple Watch, and Google’s Android Wear watches, you can use the Gear S2 to reply to messages. But while the Gear’s competitors only let you dictate your messages or send emojis or canned replies, the Gear S2 also includes a T9-style keyboard so you can actually type your own messages.

No, you’re not going to want to use that tiny keyboard to compose elaborate emails, but it’s fine for sending a quick text or replying to a Facebook message.

Besides, do you really want to be the person standing on the subway platform talking into your smartwatch like a lunatic, while you dictate a message to your spouse? Or do you want to type your reply quickly and get on with your life?

Messaging works with a variety of apps including Gmail, Google Hangouts, Facebook Messenger, HipChat, and others.

Apps on the go
In addition to sending messages, the Gear S2 works with a host of first- and third-party apps including CNN, Bloomberg, Nike+ Running, ESPN and others. To get those apps on the watch, you have to first download and install them on your phone.

The CNN app, for example, provides you with briefs on the day’s biggest news stories, while Bloomberg offers news briefs and stock quotes. There’s even a Yelp app so you can find nearby restaurants and bars right from your wrist.

Admittedly, there aren’t very many apps available for the Gear S2 yet, beyond those I’ve mentioned. But Samsung says it’s working with developers to grow its library.

The Apple Watch, by comparison, has a far larger library of apps available for download. Google’s Android Wear has a similarly sizable selection, though many of those apps feel like duplicates of each other, and a good number are just downright useless.

A battery that lasts
One of the biggest complaints people have about smartwatches is that their batteries just don’t last. You get halfway through your day, and you’re staring at a half-empty battery.

Even the Apple Watch lasts about a full day before it needs to be recharged, which can be annoying considering you’re already charging your phone at night.

That’s where the Gear S2 really excels. Samsung somehow managed to squeeze a full two days of battery life out of its watch. And by two days, I mean two days of continuously futzing around with the Gear S2, playing with the heart-rate monitor, testing location tracking, changing the brightness levels, and pretty much doing what I could to get to know the watch better.

My S2 went from a full charge at 7 p.m. on a Friday and didn’t have to placed on its wireless charger until 5 p.m. on Sunday. That’s pretty darn good.

Worth your time?
I’ve always been skeptical of smartwatches. After all, it’s not as if you actually need to own one. Then again, you don’t really need a smartphone, either. It’s something you buy because it makes your life a little easier, and that’s exactly what the Gear S2 does.

At $300 (for that base model), it’s far from a necessity. Yet, after spending the last week with it, I’m surprisingly compelled to buy one of my own. I love being able to check my messages and notifications from my wrist, and the apps are actually pretty useful, unlike many of those found on Android Wear.

If you’re in the market for a smartwatch, and aren’t an Apple fan, the Gear S2 is the best you can get.

No more nudes !!!

Now readers of Playboy, the glossy men's magazine known for its nude fold-outs, can honestly say they are buying the magazine for its articles.

Playboy will no longer publish nude photographs of women, the New York Times reported on Monday in an article quoting Scott Flanders, the company's chief executive.

Founder and editor-in-chief Hugh Hefner, 89, who in his trademark silk pajamas has embodied the Playboy lifestyle, agreed last month with a suggestion by top editor Cory Jones to stop publishing images of naked women, the Times said.

At a time when every teenage boy has an Internet connected phone and the web is rife with pornography, the magazine has opted to continue featuring women in provocative poses, just not completely nude, the Times said.

"You're now one click away from every sex act imaginable for free," Flanders was quoted as saying in the Times. "And so it's just passe at this juncture."

The magazine that featured Marilyn Monroe on its debut cover in 1953 is making the changes after circulation dropped from 5.6 million in 1975 to about 800,000 now, the Times said.

After its initial success, the magazine was attacked from the political right because of the nudity and from the left by feminists who said it reduced women to sex objects.

Some changes are still under debate, including whether there will continue to be a centerfold. Playboy magazine's sex columnist will be a woman, who writes enthusiastically about sex, Jones told the Times.

The magazine has always had intellectual appeal with top writers such as Kurt Vonnegut, Joyce Carol Oates, Vladimir Nabokov, James Baldwin and Alex Haley for men who liked to say they did not buy the magazine just for the pictures.

In-depth interviews with historic figures such as Fidel Castro, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcolm X and John Lennon also were a regular feature.

“Don’t get me wrong,” Mr. Jones said of the decision to eliminate nude pictures, “12-year-old me is very disappointed in current me. But it’s the right thing to do.”

Janet Jackson claimed her seventh career Number One album as the singer’s Unbreakable, her first LP in seven years, cruised to the top spot on the Billboard 200. Unbreakable sold 116,000 total copies in its debut week to give Jackson her second consecutive Number One album following 2008’s Discipline. Jackson’s latest chart-topper also put the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame nominee in an elite club – occupied only by Bruce Springsteen and Barbra Streisand – as artists to score Number One albums in the 2010s, 2000s, 1990s and 1980s, Billboard reports.

The Weeknd’s Beauty Behind the Madness bounced back from last week’s Number Five to Number Two this week thanks to another 73,000 total copies sold, with many of those sales coming from bulk purchases of the Hot 100’s Number One single (“The Hills”) and Number Four single (“Can’t Feel My Face.”) “The Hills” should continue its Hot 100 dominance in the coming weeks thanks to new remixes featuring Eminem and Nicki Minaj.

Last week’s Number One, Fetty Wap’s self-titled debut, dipped to Number Four, one spot behind Drake and Future’s joint mixtape What a Time to Be Alive. Tamar Braxton’s Calling All Lovers was the only other debut in the Top 10 this week, landing at Number Five. Meanwhile, Taylor Swift’s 1989 is within two weeks of spending an entire year in the Top 10 as the album ended its 50th week on the charts at Number Six.

A quartet of country music albums closed out the Top 10: Thomas Rhett’s Tangled Up, George Strait’s Cold Beer Conversation, Luke Bryan’s Kill the Lights and Don Henley’s Cass County placed Seven through 10 respectively.

I had one important question for the African player I was about to sign to our agency.

“How old are you?” I asked, over dinner in a restaurant when we’d all but done the deal.

He was a professional footballer and he laughed and then said: “You want my passport age or real age?”

“Both,” I said.

“23 and 28,” he replied. I wasn’t hugely surprised. I’d heard stories about him fiddling his age and he wouldn’t have been the first African player to do it.

Often, it’s not even their fault. They come from countries where people are out for one thing with regards to their future: money. So they give an age to suit – or rather those representing them do in the hope of a better sale. There are more players in the market for a 29-year-old than a 33-year-old.

I had one player, a really big name. At 17, he was named joint player of the tournament in a really big competition. The player he won it with would also become famous and play at the top level. My player was reading an interview a decade later when he saw that the player who was supposed to be his age was suddenly two years younger than him.

I met one big name Premier League manager and he told us of a player he referred to as his ‘soldier’. He said he was “at least four years” older than what he actually admitted to. That would stand to reason given how his subsequent career panned out.

I’ve come across several stories of Brazilian players giving the wrong age, too. They might be from very poor backgrounds and the first time they’re required to get a passport is when they leave the country to play football. A year of two can be shaved off then.

I’m writing about the age of players because I’m preparing to watch the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Chile in a few weeks and there are several African countries represented. I suspect that they’ll be more physical than some of their rivals and do better than predicted. I also suspect that one stand out African player will sign for a big European club who’ve been dazzled by his tournament performances…and then fail to live up to expectations.

Three of my players are there representing three different countries. I’ll see them; see their parents and their coaches. It’s about networking and having presence. If you’re not there, then someone will be trying to move in on your players.

Deals will be done too, usually over a few drinks. I’ve sold more players in a nightclub at 1am than in an office 12 hours earlier. It’s one reason the Italian agents are so slick, they’re great socialisers.

I’ve also got my eyes on a few potential players. Most of those good enough to be in that tournament will already have an agent, so I’ve been trying to get to players before it starts. I’ve been researching two players from a country a long way away for eight months.

I can’t just go up to them in Chile and try to sign them; we don’t even speak the same language. But I have an agent in their country and we’ve paired up; we’ll meet in Chile. I’ve got access to European markets which he hasn’t, I can get a player on trial at a club – and unless he’s a young Lionel Messi, almost every player will have to go on trial.

The players I’m looking at were born in 1998 – that’s how scouts and people in football refer to players, the year they were born. I’ll watch two or three of them as many times as I can in a real game situation against tough opponents. You’re looking at their attributes, how they handle themselves, their size, positioning and speed. By being there you’ll hear any ‘talk’ about players, whether they have an attitude problem or a dodgy agent for example.

It’s impossible for one person to scout a full game of football, there’s no way you can watch at least 22 players with the kind of attention that is needed. And you need to scout them so that you are convinced of their quality. If all goes to plan, you’re going to invest a lot of time with them and there’s a risk that you’ll never get paid for your time. And by going to Chile, I’ll already have invested a lot of time and money. But I wouldn’t be going if I didn’t think it was worth it.

I remember one time feeling tired and doubtful about making a journey to a small country in Europe to see a player, then 17. I did, I got on well with him and later persuaded him that I was the right man to represent him. He agreed and two or three moves later, he’s now an established Premier League player. I hope he doesn’t miss me while I’m away in Chile.

Let's look at the top 10 players Jose Mourinho needs to get rid of to extricate the Blues from their current malaise.

1. Branislav Ivanovic - Shocking selection, I know. Last season he was a defensive wonder of the football world. A giant boulder who had stamina and guile to operate as a wingback and striker’s instincts in set pieces. The transformation to the sorry state he is suffering now was not wholly unexpected, but the speed with which it happened is what is surprising. Chelsea have a policy of not holding on to players past the age of 30, but Mourinho was adamant to keep him, rewarding him with vice-captainship. If you ask anybody who knows anything about the EPL, they’ll almost certainly say Ivanovic should be the first to go.

2. Cesc Fabregas - Imagine you have to buy a new car that can take the wife and the kids around. It is a car that needs to be reliable, and you have enough money to buy it because you are a Russian oil mogul. So you choose to buy an Alfa Romeo from 1992. It surely must be a great purchase! It had its glory days in the past, it has excellent reputation, and it has wonderful flair. But it’s an Alfa. And it’s way past its due date. After a one year romance it begins to disappoint you. But it’s your only car, so you suffer in silence, and remain indignant about your investment. That is basically what Fabregas is. A lackluster burden that Jose Mourinho chooses to keep playing, despite him being completely impotent in every aspect of the game. The marquee signing of last year with the great assists has become complacent and lazy. No pace, no defensive determination, no creative effect. Time to sell the Alfa. To Turkey. Or MLS.

3. Ramires - After a long battle with injury, Ramires returned to the squad and Jose was delighted that he “had his Ramires back.” A definitive box-to-box player with goalscoring abilities coupled with tackling back with aplomb. He hit a howitzer against Newcastle, and as great as it was, I’d happily accept that as a final contribution of his career in London. He was woeful against Southampton, and the Brazilian was supposed to continue his super-sub magic from Tyneside but failed horribly, in the most important part of the pitch, next to the least appropriate defensive midfielder, Fabregas.

4. John Terry - Chelsea’s leader, legend, and liability. He is so committed to the club and to playing for them as exemplified by the embarrassing tag-along at the Champions League final in 2012, appearing in full kit at the final whistle despite being banned for the match. He was a stalwart last year, his positional sense and anticipation was second to none. In the entirety of the season he had TWO yellow cards. He got one in the first match of this year against Swansea for protesting. And obviously screwed the pooch against West Brom with a sending off. Controversial and almost universally hated, nationally hated for sure, John Terry is a mixed bag of good and bad. Again, I think the ride is over for him, but he can still be useful. In the backroom, and at Cobham. Once a new center back is bought, Jose should have “the talk” with John and say he can either bring a neck pillow to the bench for the games, or go out gracefully and immediately to take a background role, still teaching the youngsters and giving coaching advice. Like they say, “Those who cant do, teach.”

5. John Obi Mikel - This one is a mercy killing. He was inches away from a move to Turkey that would have seen him get regular playing time. A chance to play while he’s still relatively young, and a chance to express himself in ways to make Chelsea regret keeping him in reserve for so many years. It’s such a sad story of John Obi Mikel, a dedicated, dutiful servant to the club. The man who carved out a new temporal part of games known as “John Obi Mikel Time,” when the game needs to be shut down, usually with the win in the bag. If Abramovich let Čech go because he earned it from his service, the same should apply to Mikel. I think Andreas Christensen from the youth squad would make a great successor. Just don’t let him go to Arsenal, he doesn’t deserve to be reviled by the Chelsea faithful.

6. Loïc Remy - Ugh… I just-… There’s no reason wh-… He’s so-…

Just get rid of him.

7. Pedro - Playing fourth fiddle to Barcelona’s front line has Pedro dealing with repressed feelings of discontent like a man in a midlife crisis. He is trying to make up for lost time on the bench in Spain by trying to be the Messi of Chelsea. 28 years old, Pedrito is tired of being treated like a kid and as a sideshow. He is snatching at shots and dawdling on the ball with desperate faith in his impressive displays of footballing grace. I was blown away with his contributions at West Brom, a goal and an assist on a debut is a remarkable thing. His goal was a sort of frustrated expression at Chelsea’s wastefulness. Like he was saying, “Okay, guys. It’s been twenty minutes. Let’s get this show on the road.” He took the onus on himself, running through defenders with a point to prove, and scuffing the ball into the corner. Since then he has failed to impress. Being caught in possession, scoring rugby tries instead of football goals, and generally displaying symptoms of the Chelsea Plague that the rest of the squad is suffering from. I don’t think he should be sold, but he should be given a good, hard shake, and snapped back to reality.

8. Ruben Loftus-Cheek - “Drop” is the wrong word, but “loan” is almost certainly the best course of action for a midfielder with so much promise. Ross Barkley isn’t much older than RLC, and he is a starter for Everton, with fantastic displays of passing range and creativity. He had to prove himself as a younger player, but that is predicated on the manager at least selecting him. RLC isn’t getting a look into the first team, and many Chelsea fans see him as our savior as a fresh injection into midfield. This lack of involvement looks to be endemic of the type of treatment poor Obi Mikel has suffered. Either play him or loan him out to a team where he can make an impact, Jose. He has potential not seen every day.

9. Falcao - Every hedge fund and asset manager in the world must be equal parts jealous and impressed by Monaco for making a profit off of a depreciating asset. He made astounding amounts of money at Man Utd, and although he is making half the amount at Chelsea, the French Riviera club are enjoying their cigars and martinis with a little more relish knowing his utter failure as a footballer grates no skin off their back. When Mourinho spoke out about how he was willing to take the Colombian under his wing, I bet Monaco was more than happy to dump their lemon on him. Passing on the buy-option, he’s just another wart on the face of Chelsea that’ll be gone soon. Here’s to hoping the blemish doesn’t become septic.

10. Diego Costa - Oh, Diego. How we love you. We chant your name at away matches where you aren’t even on the bench. We chant your name at will, because you make us happy. You are the quintessential bad guy who we root for. But the cost you bring with the occasional goal is far too high. Dribbling in from the left wing always ends in failure. Your hold-up play leads to naught. And you punch too many people in the face too often. You have forced Chelsea fans to defend you and the image you project on us by association. You are no altar boy, you said it yourself, but being an effective striker does not entail being a sociopathic one. A great finisher with height and strength is a wonderful asset. A violent, ineffective, sluggish, and selfish player is a millstone.

Sure you’re handling dirty diapers by the pail-load and have breast milk stains on your shirt. But, whether or not you believe it, you’re actually hotter than ever.

1. You’ve realized you’re powerful

“Feeling sexy is about power,” says J. Maria Bermudez, PhD, a family therapist and associate professor at The University of Georgia. People in power tend to have infectious, wildly appealing charisma. And don’t you feel strong just having gone through the birth process? Heck, you created a whole (pretty amazing) human. If you can do that, you can do almost anything.

2. You’re in charge

Ever heard of mama-bear syndrome? Having a defenseless little baby you’re responsible for can make you more assertive and confident. “Motherhood tends to make women less fearful and more open to all sorts of things,” says Danielle Cavallucci, coauthor of Your Orgasmic Pregnancy. You’re not shy about speaking up when the doctor’s office wait is too long, or saying “hands off” when a stranger tries to touch baby in the supermarket. Can we all agree that confidence makes someone more alluring? And there’s really no reason to be shy in the bedroom either.

3. Breastfeeding = nature’s boob job

For as long as you’re breastfeeding, your normally B cups may be well in D-cup territory, and anything fitted with a V-neck looks ah-mazing. Being big busted feels healthy, takes the focus off any baby weight you still want to lose and makes you feel hot in your favorite slinky slip. Not to mention the fact that your partner can’t take his eyes off your new, more voluptuous figure.

4. You’re in touch with your body

“Something about letting go of the muscles surrounding a woman’s vaginal floor during childbirth allows a greater release of what is, for some, a pent-up area of their sexuality,” Cavallucci says. Translation: You may feel like you’re better at working things, um, down there.

5. You’re less self-conscious

When you give birth, you pretty much have to leave all your humility at the door. You were practically naked (or maybe completely naked) in front of virtual strangers in the delivery room. Why have any inhibitions about your body now?

6. The big “o” gets better

Heard rumors of a horrible sex life after baby? That’s not always true. While science hasn’t proven it, Cavallucci says many women she’s interviewed have better, more intense orgasms during pregnancy, and that translates to great postbaby ones too. “Anything that opens you up to a more full sexual expression is going to increase your capacity for sensory pleasure,” she says.

7. You feel closer to your partner

“Sometimes becoming a mother can reinvigorate a woman’s sex life by adding dimension and depth to her relationship with herself as well as her partner,” Cavallucci says. You two got through the terrifying, beautiful, emotionally draining birth together, and now that you’ve made the big leap into parent status, you’re working as a team in ways you never did before. This new bond rejuvenates your relationship and can inspire that can’t-keep-your-hands-off-each-other feeling.

We’ve been in the Era of the Big Booty for a while now, thanks to celebrities like Iggy Azalea, Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez, and Kim Kardashian.

We’ve gone from trying to jazzercise our bums away to working out to enhance every curve we’ve got. The good thing is that the ongoing cultural obsession with the booty has ushered in a moment where women’s curves are being celebrated rather than shamed. We’re no longer into wasting away toward waifdom or modeling our #BodyGoals after strung-out heroin users. Instead, there’s been more mainstream acceptance of curvier female figures and intense backlash against those who criticize it.

The only problem is that we’ve possibly traded one obsession for another. Has getting the perfect butt become just another item on a long list of idealized body parts a beautiful woman is supposed to have? It would seem so, given the boom in businesses that promise to help women achieve the perfect booty. There are butt-enhancing jeans, butt lifters, and padded panties, as well as pills, creams, and lasers that claim to boost the size of your rear. In 2014, there was a 98 percent increase in butt implants, plus a 44 percent increase in butt lifts. Similarly, RealSelf.com, an online plastic surgery community, reports search increases of 33 percent and 31 percent for information on butt implants and Brazilian butt lifts, respectively.

“There’s been a tsunami of interest in contouring the buttocks,” explains Constantino Mendieta, MD, a Miami-based plastic surgeon and author of The Art of Gluteal Sculpting, who reports that butt enhancement now makes up 70 percent of his practice. The quest for the perfect booty is now global, with surgeons like Mendieta traveling as far as Egypt and Saudi Arabia to instruct local doctors on the latest techniques.

Also adding to the frenzy: social media feeds dedicated to finding and praising the best butts, with tags like #BootyGoals and #Belfie (that would be a “butt selfie,” if you’re not up on the lingo). Newer to the scene is the tag #UnderButt, which captures and celebrate shots of the space on a woman’s body where the buttocks meet the legs. There is also #SideButt, which can either be profile shots to show how much one’s booty protrudes or seated shots wherein the poser spreads her flesh in order to accentuate just how much of a booty she has. Either way, the message is clear: No shapewear or other accessories needed here.

Venerating and idolizing certain female body parts is nothing new, points out Melanie Klein, a professor of sociology and women’s studies at Santa Monica College. Remember how showing off a peek of butt crack was the new cleavage a few years back? But what is new is the amount of exposure we’re all subjected to — both from corporate media giants and our peers on social media — and the fact that all of it, including our own selfies, is digitally altered. “The sheer volume of images we’re exposed to is unprecedented, as is the degree of manipulation.” says Klein. “Together they’re creating a beauty standard that doesn’t even exist in real life.”

For some, endeavoring to achieve the perfect booty — or finally embracing curves instead of trying to exercise them away — is about self-empowerment and acceptance. “Growing up, I wanted to be a ballerina, but people made fun of my ‘thunder thighs,’” recalls Kelly Brabants, a personal trainer at BFX Studio in Boston, where she teaches a class called Booty by Brabants. But the shift in mainstream definitions of beauty has transformed how she feels about her own body — and inspired her to help other women find similar inner confidence. “Because of everything that’s happened over the past few years in pop culture, I’ve been able to accept and grow into my body.” And she channels that feeling into her workout philosophy, which is about improving on — and liking — what you’ve got.

For 34-year-old Jada (*name has been changed), who lives near Miami, getting a more perfect butt was her way of feeling comfortable with her body again after having two children. She spent months trying to work on her physique through diet and exercise after having kids, but she wasn’t satisfied with the results. And feeling bombarded by media images of women flaunting perfect bottoms didn’t make it any easier. “When you’ve got models and celebrities everywhere with a small waist and a big butt, it leaves you wanting the same,” says Jada. So, she spent a year researching her options and picking a surgeon based on reviews and comments she found online. “It wasn’t about finding a bunch of wish pictures, but figuring out an improved body shape that’s right for me.” According to Mendieta (who did not treat Jada), his patients call their enhancement procedures “empowering” and “life-changing.” “Not just because of the attention they receive,” says Mendieta, “but because it gives them the self-confidence to do things they wouldn’t have done before” — including getting out of abusive relationships.

Not all women, however, are thrilled about our culture’s ongoing obsession with women’s butts or feel like accepting women’s curves is radically new. “People of color have been curvy forever, and yet, suddenly, white women are appropriating these looks, styles, and features,” says Michelle Threadgould, 29, a biracial writer living in Oakland, Calif. “Is there a changing shift toward body positivity, a public uproar against fat-shaming, and a general understanding that skinny is no longer the new sexy? That depends on who you ask.”

Ultimately, the pursuit of the perfect booty raises questions about what it means when a body part is a key to fitting into a cultural definition of beauty and achieving self-acceptance. “Whether it’s the current cultural moment the perfect booty is having, or the explosion in vaginal reconstruction that has been popular in the recent past, or the ongoing obsession with women’s breasts — it’s really all the same,” explains Klein. “It has us focusing on and evaluating women’s body parts instead of their whole selves.” And what’s beautiful or empowering about that?
